Welcome to my little spot on the internet! Here you’ll find posts about the goings-on at my historic house in Georgia, which used to be the Baptist parsonage in my town. (More on that later.)
I adore social media, and you can find me on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. However, I love to write! In fact, my undergrad degree was in English, and while I had to take some literature classes in order to graduate, I focused as much as I could on composition courses.
Over time, I’ll tell you more about myself, but for now, it’s most important to share that I’m a first time homeowner, so this was my first experience with purchasing a home, and now this is my first attempt at caring for a home of my own. Of course I tried to take care of my previous residences, but they were all rentals, so I was limited in what I could do in those places.
But this space is mine. Honestly, it doesn’t yet feel like mine, but that’s because I haven’t really put my stamp on it. That will come over time, and I’m excited to share my progress! I have big plans, and while some of them seem pretty daunting, I’m reminded of this quote:
Nothing is impossible. The word itself says ‘I’m possible!’
Audrey Hepburn
I recently filmed a video tour of my house, and most rooms right now have no furniture in them — though, there’s plenty of cat toys — because I sold or gave away most of the stuff I had before. It didn’t fit this house, so I didn’t bring it with me. I thought it was best to begin afresh. However, I’m not made of money, and while I did make a bit off the old stuff, that promptly went toward an emergency vet bill. So, I will be adding new items S-L-O-W-L-Y, and some rooms may not be furnished for years. That’s okay with me! I’d rather have the right pieces rather than any old junk.
Oh! This is where I should tell you that it’s just me, so double the slow progress because it’s one woman on her own. (Actually, that’s not quite true. My family helps me when I get a wild notion, but it’s over an hour to get to where my parents and sister live, and my brother is several states away. So, I’m MOSTLY on my own. You’ll see my family show up from time to time, though!)
And let me stop myself there, because my cats would argue that they’re always there, and they are. There are three of them: Edie (Ee-dee), Phryne (Fry-nee), and Sidney. While they think they’re helpful, sometimes we’ll need to agree to disagree. One day, I’ll post a video of me trying to make the bed with Edie’s “assistance.” It’s… something.
Nevertheless, the cats bring warmth and entertainment to the home, and they’re very much a part of every decision I make, even down to the plants I choose. I also, for their benefit, have begun greening my cleaning materials, and in the process, I’ve found that it’s better for the house, too. And for me.
When I greened my cleaning materials, I decided to try to green other things about my routine, too. I’m never, ever going to make it to zero-waste. I live in the United States in the year 2021, where plastic and gas are almost unavoidable. But I am cutting out single-use plastic where I can, and eventually I want to start composting for my garden. My garden is tiny, but I’ll of course be talking about it, too, as I begin planting seeds in the early spring. See how one thing leads to another, which then leads to another? Now you’ve also learned I’m a bit of a topic-hopper!
I don’t know where all of this will go, but I do hope that this blog — and my social media accounts — make historic homeownership more relatable and less daunting for you! And I hope it’s all entertaining in the process!
Until next time, y’all take care!
